Under the 4Runner's Hood

The 4Runner comes with a 4.0-liter V6 engine. It has a five-speed ECT-I automatic transmission with sequential shift mode. It is rated at 278 pound-feet of torque. There is also a dual independent variable valve timing with intelligence that optimizes the torque. Since there is so much torque, it is perfect for towing. The 4Runner can tow up to 5,000 pounds and has a maximum 500-pound tongue weight. There is the standard automatic limited slip differential that allows some wheel slippage to help the vehicle dig out of snow or sand. The available 4WD system uses Active Traction Control and off-road capability with a two-speed transfer case. The Limited trim level gets a 4WD system that uses a Torsen center differential with a three-mode console switch and a locking feature. The system uses a 40:60 torque split. If the front wheels are slipping when the vehicle is turning it changes to a 30:70 split and when the rear wheels slip while turning it goes to a 53:47 split.
