We are here to help you figure that out by placing each of these models side by side, analyzing all that they have to offer from engine options to trim levels and features. Keep reading the rest of our comparison review to find out which one of these models comes out as the winner!

2019 Toyota Highlander Power & Handling

The Toyota Highlander can be powered by one of two engine options for the 2019 model year. The standard engine, a 2.7-liter inline-4 creates up to 185 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. With this engine, the front wheels are powered by a six-speed automatic transmission. Other trim levels can be powered by the available 3.5-liter V6 that cranks out 295 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque. This engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and can be configured with both front-wheel drive and available all-wheel-drive. With the V6 engine, the Highlander can tow up to 5,000 pounds! There is technically a third engine option available and its a hybrid powertrain! This hybrid powertrain is comprised of the V6 engine and an AC 650V permanent-magnet motors for a 306 total horsepower output.

2019 Ford Explorer Power & Handling

There are three engine options for the Ford Explorer. The base 3.5-liter V6 produces up to 290 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque. More power can be found with the available 2.3L turbo inline-4 that delivers 280 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The final engine, a 3.5L twin-turbo V6 that generates 365 horsepower and 350 horsepower. All three engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Sadly, there is no hybrid powertrain option for the 2019 Ford Explorer.

2019 Toyota Highlander Features & Design

Toyota offers six Highlander trim levels for the 2019 model year. The entry-level LE model comes outfitted with standard features like 18" alloy wheels, a height-adjustable driver's seat, Bluetooth, rear privacy glass, five USB ports, six-speaker sound system, a 6.1" touchscreen, a rearview camera, and reclining and split folding second- and third-row seating. Each Highlander model is also outfitted with the Toyota Safety Sense bundle which encompasses a slew of driver assistance features for additional safety. The upper trim levels add on features like a hi-res 8" touchscreen, keyless entry and ignition, a navigation system, leather upholstery, fog lights, Driver Easy Speak, upgraded instrument panel, a panoramic sunroof, a surround view parking camera, premium JBL sound system, and Safety Connect emergency communications.

2019 Ford Explorer Features & Design

The Ford Explorer is offered in just five trim levels for the 2019 model year. Standard features consist of a 4.2" central display screen, a rearview camera, Bluetooth, a USB port, and a power-adjustable driver's seat. This trim is pretty bare in terms of features. Other trim levels add features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather upholstery, power-folding third-row seats, and a premium audio system. Most of the features you actually want are tucked away behind expensive packages.

We think that it's pretty easy to see that the 2019 Toyota Highlander is the better three-row SUV. While the Ford Explorer does have a decent engine lineup, the Highlander surpasses it with a great hybrid option! Plus, you don't have to purchase expensive packages to get the features that you want! Interested in learning more about the 2019 Toyota Highlander or other 2019 Toyota SUVs?
