Pet Travelling Tips

Summer is perfect road tripping weather, especially with the kids getting out of school. Virginia in particular is known to many as the perfect area to grab the family and go! But you can't forget one of the most important members of your family--your pet. Many people enjoy taking their dogs along with them, but they aren't quite sure what to do in order to prepare for a road trip with their animal. We're here to not only give you a few places to travel to this summer, but to provide you with helpful information as to what you should do when you're travelling with your pet. Keep reading down below to learn more!

Make an appointment with the vet: Before you go anywhere, it's important to make sure that your pet is feeling well. To do so, schedule an appointment with the veterinarian, and have them look over your pet to make sure they're in top travelling condition and all of their vaccinations are up to date. You might also want a copy of your pets record, in case you need to stop at a veterinary clinic while you're out traveling. This way you have all the information that another veterinarian might need should an emergency arise.

Prep your pet: If your pet isn't used to going on long rides, it's important to make sure that they're used to the experience. To start, bring them on short drives at first, and as time goes on, gradually lengthen the trips. Once you've hit a pretty nice amount of road time, you will know what to expect with your pet, and they'll be more comfortable riding around.

Create a pet-friendly travel kit: Just like you prepare with kids, pets need their own set of supplies. Some of the major items to keep in your pet kit includes a leash, food, a bowl, plastic bags, potential medication they might have, their favorite toy, treats, and water. Water is a vital part of this road trip. Your pet needs to be drinking a lot of water, and you need to make sure that you're providing them with that necessity.

Keep pets secured: Depending on the size of your animal, you need to make sure that they are properly secured and safe in a crate/carrier. This means making sure that the crate doesn't shift whenever there's an abrupt stop. We also highly recommend not letting your pet put their head out the window. That is incredibly dangerous, and they are better off keeping their heads inside. If you opt to let your vehicle ride without a crate, place them in the backseat where they will be safer.

What places should I travel with my pets in Virginia?

There are many places in Virginia that are perfect for you and man's best friend. One of the top travel destinations is Alexandria's Footsteps of the Past Walking Tours. Your and you pet can go through Alexandria and learn about the history of the area. This is especially perfect if you're looking for something educational to do with the kids. Another great destination is the Shenandoah River. Here you can rent a canoe, go kayaking, and experience the perfect afternoon on the river. For a perfect weekend in the great outdoors, consider checking out Sandy Bottom Nature Park. This place is perfect for camping, hiking, and fishing. So pack your bags, it's time to go!
